The Central Valley has long been a breeding ground for elite high school basketball, and the next generation of talent is now stepping onto the collegiate stage. Ryleigh Schoonover, a standout from Clovis West, is starting her freshman year at Fresno State, bringing the habits of a perennial powerhouse to the Bulldogs' women's program.

Schoonover is part of a talented incoming class for Fresno State. She chose to stay close to home rather than travel far for college, a decision that carries personal significance for the player. She noted that wearing the valley 'V' on her jersey is a unique experience that many outside the region do not fully appreciate. This local connection allows her to maintain ties to the community that shaped her early career.

Her high school background is defined by sustained excellence. For the past 14 years, Clovis West has won consecutive Central Section championships. This long streak has made winning a core part of the program's identity. Head coach Craig Campbell explained that the goal is to remain competitive every single season. He stated, "We want to be good every year. We're not going to win it every year, but we want to be knocking on the door every year."

Fresno State coach Ryan McCarthy has high hopes for his new recruit. He believes Schoonover was the top player in the area for her graduating class of 2026. McCarthy said she proved her worth immediately upon joining the team. He added, "In my opinion, Riley was the best player in the area for her class of 2026. Riley came in and proved that right away."

Schoonover credits her high school coach for preparing her for the intensity of college basketball. She said that the standard of play at Clovis West mirrored the expectations at Fresno State. She noted, "Everything is the standard." McCarthy agreed, saying that her experience in a program that consistently wins has readied her for the demands of the collegiate floor. He added, "She played with a very good high school basketball program here, and all they did was win. And so, that's the expectation when she sets out on the floor."

The Bulldogs are currently aiming for a Pac-12 championship, and Schoonover is positioned to contribute to that effort. Her season debut is imminent, as Fresno State prepares to face UC Merced in less than two weeks. The game will be played at the Save Mart Center, marking Schoonover's first collegiate game in front of a home crowd.

Campbell believes his former player has only begun to show her potential. He expressed excitement for the future, stating that she is just scratching the surface of what she can do for McCarthy and the staff. This transition from high school star to college freshman highlights the strong pipeline of talent from the region to major athletic programs.

As the season approaches, the focus remains on integrating these new players into a competitive roster. Schoonover's arrival adds depth to a team with high ambitions. The coming weeks will test her ability to adapt to the pace of college basketball while maintaining the winning mentality that defined her time at Clovis West.
