Anthropic Investors See Multi-Billion Dollar Windfalls Ahead of Potential 2026 Listing

Early and late-stage backers of the AI firm are holding positions valued in the billions, with significant gains expected if the company proceeds with a public offering this year.

As the artificial intelligence sector prepares for a potential market milestone this year, the impending public listing of Anthropic is poised to deliver substantial financial gains to its early and later-stage investors. While the company is projected to debut at a valuation of up to $2 trillion, the current private market price tag of $965 billion already represents a significant valuation for its backers. According to data reviewed by Bloomberg, the stakes held by various venture capital firms and individual investors now aggregate to billions of dollars, even before the anticipated IPO premium is factored in.

The earliest investors have seen the most dramatic appreciation in their holdings. Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google, entered the company during its 2021 Series A round when the startup was valued at $461 million. Today, his ownership of approximately 1% of the company is worth nearly $10 billion at the current private valuation. Similarly, Spark Capital, the only venture firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic, invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C round when the valuation stood at $5 billion. That position has since increased by more than ninetyfold to a value of $7 billion.

Other early and mid-stage participants have also realized considerable growth. Sound Ventures, a firm co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, initially invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C. The firm subsequently added another $400 million to its position, resulting in a stake now valued in the billions. Notably, Kutcher departed Sound Ventures this year to establish a separate venture capital entity. Menlo Ventures, which led Anthropic’s Series D, has invested more than $1 billion over time, a commitment that is now worth approximately $14 billion.

Later-stage investors, who entered at significantly higher valuations, are also positioned for strong returns. Iconiq wrote a $6 billion check to the company last year when it was valued at $183 billion. That investment is currently valued at $17 billion and could double if the IPO proceeds as expected. Sequoia, which first backed the AI lab earlier this year, invested $3 billion when the valuation was $380 billion. This acquisition granted the firm about 1% ownership, meaning its initial capital has already more than doubled in value.

These valuations are calculated based on the most recent private market round. If Anthropic successfully lists on the public market at the projected $2 trillion mark, these figures would rise further, cementing the financial success of both the pioneering and institutional investors who supported the company’s growth.

The upcoming listing represents a pivotal moment for the AI industry, offering a clear benchmark for the value of leading laboratories. For the Midwest and broader national readership, this event underscores the rapid capital accumulation in the technology sector, where early strategic bets are translating into historic financial outcomes for a select group of investors.
